Tomorrow's World

Search engines can be your biggest friend and also a total frustration.

The search engine market is also in a state of high flux with a very vicious fight between the established search engines such as Google, AltaVista and Yahoo and the newer entrants such as MSN Search and Clusty :-

  • Getting Listed

One of the oldest scams is paying people money to get listed in the various search engines.

Forget it! Go to each in turn, find how you add urls and then add them.

Bear in mind though that sites sometimes take a few weeks to get listed. So give yourself plenty of time. Everybody seems to do the web site as an after-thought. This is wrong! As each detail of your business is planned and written up, it should be uploaded, so that each search engine can read it.

  • Google

Google is pre-eminent, so always follow where you are listed in this search engine.

  • Google-Ads

You may find that these are worthwhile for your company. I've used them for one or two web sites and they seem to be beneficial, as when particular keywords are entered, a small add is placed, which can be clicked by the searcher.

  • Images

Label all of your images and pictures properly, so that they get picked up by the search engines. Some searchers often search for images rather than text as it gives a tighter and more specific search.

  • Company Name

If you have a unique company name, then you will be found much quicker by any searcher. Go was probably the worst company name for search engines, wheras something like Glaxo is very good.

But you will also find search engines frustrating, in that sometimes your listing will nosedive down the list on say Google and be at the top on MSN Search.
