This is the introduction to the nine page review on the Republic of Angola.

"Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos is one of the few heads of state to have had two meetings with US President George W Bush in as many years. The fact that Angola is Africa's second largest oil producer is inevitably attributed to the US interest in Angola as it rebuilds itself after a crippling 28-year civil war. Angola's civil war was, for long a 'hot' front in the 'cold' war, with Cuban troops deployed against those of South Africa, each supporting opposing factions. Angola has also been named as one of the countries eligible to share the benefits of the US African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which will, inter alia, facilitate Angolan exports to the US."
