A Typical Review - Brunei This is the introduction to the nine page review on the Sultanate of Brunei. "Brunei's size and oil wealth have tended to make the tiny sultanate easy to govern. Yet, the ruling monarchy is changing, aware that an abundance of oil cannot sustain economic development or the adulation of its subjects. A rise in political and religious militancy in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines, along with growing violent opposition to the monarchy in oil-rich Saudi Arabia, has prompted Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to seek a more ethical approach involving a strictly controlled Islamicisation of Brunei's society. At the same time, the monarchy is attempting to diversify the economy to reduce dependency on foreign workers and encourage domestic employment. But the possibility that a surge in radical Islamic activity could spill over into Brunei puts the sultanate in a hazardous position with uncertainty over how the local population would respond. This threat has prompted Brunei to engage in regional security initiatives as well as joint military exercises with its former colonial ruler, the UK." A typical review for each country contains several sections. For Brunei these include; Islamic bigotry, diversifying for future growth, outlook and risk assessment. This is in addition to the standard reviews for each country. |
